The twelve wind turbines of the alpha ventus offshore wind farm will be maintained and serviced by Deutsche Windtechnik from January 2027, after Ocean Breeze Energy GmbH & Co. KG awarded the Bremen-based independent service provider a comprehensive maintenance and troubleshooting contract.
Broad scope of services begins in January 2027
The agreement follows a tender process that Ocean Breeze Energy describes as short but intense, and it hands responsibility for all twelve turbines at the site to a single external service company.
The contract's coverage goes beyond turbine maintenance and troubleshooting alone. It also includes associated technical support for the wind farm. From September 2027, the scope will broaden further: Deutsche Windtechnik will then additionally take on remote monitoring, operation of the Marine Coordination Centre/Offshore Control Centre (MCC/OCC), grid management, and 24/7 alarm handling for all of the wind turbines.
According to Ocean Breeze Energy, the decision in favour of Deutsche Windtechnik rested on a tailored, cost-optimised proposal, strong technical competence, and experience with the two turbine technologies installed at alpha ventus, complemented by many years of familiarity with the wind farm itself. The two companies have agreed to work together in a partnership. Design responsibility, referred to as third-level management, remains with Ocean Breeze Energy.
A track record at the site since 2017
The award formalises a relationship that has already existed for years. Since 2017, Deutsche Windtechnik has been responsible for the basic maintenance of the six Senvion 5M turbines at alpha ventus, and from early 2020 it also serviced the six AREVA Multibrid (M5000) turbines. Both of those earlier contracts came to an end at the close of 2024. With this experience, the company now positions itself as a leading independent service provider for both turbine types, drawing on expertise built up in numerous projects across Europe, both onshore and offshore.
The new contract allows it to demonstrate that combined competence for the Senvion and AREVA Multibrid technologies under the wind farm's new shareholder. Achim Berge Olsen, CEO of Deutsche Windtechnik Offshore und Consulting, noted that the company has supported the alpha ventus project in many ways over the years. He also pointed to the company's enhanced presence at the service location on the island of Borkum, from which it already operates two projects and can therefore respond quickly on site.
Continued operation confirmed for Germany's first offshore wind farm
Alpha ventus holds a special place in the German energy landscape as the country's first offshore wind farm and a key test field for the development of offshore wind energy. Under Ocean Breeze Energy, its new owner, the wind farm is entering a new phase, and the continued operation of the pioneering project has been confirmed.
With the service award, Ocean Breeze Energy is placing its trust in the proven expertise of its new partner. Jean Huby, CEO of Ocean Breeze Energy, welcomed the collaboration, saying the company looks forward to working in partnership with Deutsche Windtechnik.
He stated that with OEM-level technology competence and an experienced partner, the aim is to use the existing infrastructure to the full and continue generating North Sea power, contributing to the energy transition and the European net zero agenda.
Three wind farms operated from Borkum
A strategic element of the agreement is Deutsche Windtechnik's expansion within the Borkum offshore cluster. Alongside its existing contract for the Trianel Wind Farm Borkum I, the company now holds contracts for the Riffgat offshore wind farm and, with the new award, for alpha ventus as well. From the island of Borkum, Deutsche Windtechnik now operates three offshore wind farms in total.
This clustering is expected to generate considerable synergies. Shared resources and well-established on-site expertise allow short troubleshooting response times, efficient logistics, and optimal deployment planning for service teams. In the company's view, the growing Borkum portfolio creates ideal conditions for reliable and cost-efficient service delivery.
Ocean Breeze Energy: operator of two North Sea wind farms
Ocean Breeze Energy specialises in the operation and lifetime extension of offshore wind farms. As owner and operator, the company runs two North Sea projects: BARD Offshore 1, with a capacity of 400 MW, and alpha ventus, with 60 MW.
Its portfolio comprises more than 90 wind turbines, and the company maintains offices in Bremen and Emden. According to the announcement, it contributes to the energy transition toward climate neutrality. Ownership rests entirely with funds managed by Macquarie Asset Management.
Deutsche Windtechnik's service offering
Deutsche Windtechnik AG, headquartered in Bremen like its new contract partner, ranks among the leading independent service providers for the technical maintenance of wind turbines. The company offers a complete package for the maintenance and upkeep of turbines from leading manufacturers from a single source, operating across Europe, North America and Taiwan on both onshore and offshore projects.
In the offshore sector, the company brings many years of experience in the maintenance of wind turbines and substations. Its service concepts span maintenance and repair, large component replacement, subsea services, and technical asset management, all aimed at enabling efficient and safe wind farm operations.
It is this breadth of offshore capability, combined with its established presence at alpha ventus and on Borkum, that underpinned its selection as the wind farm's full-service partner from 2027.
