The change of ownership at Alpha Ventus was finalized on 10 September 2026, transferring Germany's first offshore wind farm to Ocean Breeze Energy (OBE). With the transaction complete, OBE has begun implementing the continued operation of the pioneering project in order to maximize its potential.
The management of OBE now also forms the management of Deutsche Offshore-Testfeld und Infrastruktur GmbH & Co. KG (DOTI), the holding company for the North Sea wind farm. Jean Huby, Managing Director of Ocean Breeze Energy and DOTI, expressed gratitude to the sellers for the way the handover was conducted.
"We would like to thank EWE, RWE, and Vattenfall for ensuring the transaction went smoothly, and all our partners who supported us in executing in the process of acquisition of alpha ventus," Huby said. Looking ahead, he highlighted the task facing the company: "We are now looking forward to the challenge of utilizing the existing infrastructure for as long as possible to generate North Sea electricity in order to drive the energy transition forward as effectively as possible."
The company characterizes the completed acquisition as the outcome of months of intensive collaboration with the previous consortium of owners, both internally and with partners from all the companies involved. OBE will now commence work at the Alpha Ventus offshore wind farm and concentrate on its ongoing operation.
Having taken over the holding company, Ocean Breeze Energy says its top priority is ensuring the wind farm's continued operation and integrating the project into the existing processes of the company, which describes itself as a specialist offshore wind farm operator.
The acquisition adds twelve 5-megawatt offshore wind turbines and a substation to OBE's assets, which already include the Bard Offshore 1 wind farm and the prototype turbines at Rysumer Nacken. Following the addition, OBE currently operates 94 wind turbines and two substations.
Ocean Breeze Energy owns and operates the North Sea wind farm BARD Offshore 1, with a capacity of 400 megawatts, and alpha ventus, with a capacity of 60 megawatts, along with the related substations.
The company, which has offices in Bremen and Emden and operates more than 90 wind turbines, states that it is making a significant contribution to the energy transition on the path to climate neutrality. It specializes in the long-term operation of offshore wind farms and is wholly owned by funds managed by Macquarie Asset Management.
Alpha Ventus is located some 45 kilometres from Ventus of Borkum in the North Sea. It started operating in 2010 with twelve turbines and a total capacity of 60 megawatts, making it Germany's first offshore wind farm.
The closing of the deal follows an earlier announcement. On 1 October 2026, the company reported that Ocean Breeze Energy had agreed to acquire the Alpha Ventuskilometers offshore wind farm, with Alpha Ventus expected to close shortly. That closing has now taken place, which the company describes as opening a new chapter for the pioneering wind farm.
