ORLEN Neptun files environmental assessments for four Baltic West offshore wind areas in the Polish Baltic Sea, targeting 4 GW capacity to power over 5 mil
Research Desk
The Environmental Impact Assessment Reports submitted by ORLEN Neptun were built on comprehensive studies of marine environmental conditions and monitoring of living organisms in the areas where the Baltic West project is expected to be developed.
Marine mammals, birds, and benthic organisms were among the species monitored during the surveys. The fieldwork was carried out by the Polish company MEWO, which deployed survey vessels and an aircraft capable of taking aerial photos.
A team of MEWO experts specializing in all analyzed components of the marine environment prepared the documentation. The survey results formed the basis for assessing the project's impact on the environment and for determining the conditions of its implementation and operation. According to the company, the adopted solutions ensure the planned investments will be carried out with respect for the natural environment and with no significant impact on its condition.
ORLEN Neptun announced on 8 October 2026 that it had submitted the reports for four areas of the Baltic West offshore wind farm project to the relevant administration authority. The company describes the submission as a key milestone on the road to obtaining the environmental decision required for an offshore wind farm.
Marcin Sowiński, the project's director, said the submission represents another important step towards the development of Baltic West, one that allows the company to open the next phase of the investment process. That phase includes further administrative proceedings and obtaining the environmental decision, both necessary to implement the project and to take part in the auction dedicated to offshore wind energy facilities.
The four areas covered by the Baltic West project are expected to reach a total installed capacity of approximately 4 GW, enough to provide power for more than 5 million households in Poland. According to the schedule, power from the Baltic West farm will flow for the first time in 2034+.
Baltic West is the second offshore wind farm developed by ORLEN Neptun and forms part of ORLEN Group's wider renewable energy plans. The Group is aiming to reach 12.8 GW of installed renewable energy capacity by 2035. Having secured five sites for offshore wind farms, ORLEN Group's generation potential may soon reach a total of more than 6 GW of installed capacity in offshore wind farms.
