Vattenfall and the Danish Energy Agency have signed the final agreements for two offshore wind projects in Denmark, Hesselø and Holmsland, advancing the schemes awarded to the company in the country's most recent offshore wind tender in August 2026.
Vattenfall announced the signing on 4 November 2026. The documents were signed by Anne Mette Traberg, Country Manager Denmark at Vattenfall, and Adrian Lübbert, Director General of the Danish Energy Agency.
North Sea I Mid becomes Holmsland
One consequence of the agreement is a change of name: the project formerly designated North Sea I Mid will now be known as Holmsland. Vattenfall explained that the new name reflects the project's position off the Holmsland coast and was chosen to make the project more easily recognisable.
Minimum 1,000 MW in the North Sea and 800 MW in the Kattegat
The Holmsland project is located in the North Sea near Hvide Sande and will have a minimum capacity of 1,000 MW. Hesselø, situated in the Kattegat, will have a minimum capacity of 800 MW.
Combined, the two schemes will contribute at least 1.8 GW of new offshore wind capacity to the Danish energy system. Both are expected to be operational by 2032, and Vattenfall says the added capacity will help meet growing electricity demand and support Denmark's long-term climate ambitions.
Construction still conditional on investment decisions
With the agreements in place, Vattenfall will press ahead with developing both projects in close cooperation with authorities and stakeholders. The company notes, however, that any future decision to build the projects remains subject to final investment decisions and the relevant approvals.
Vattenfall's footprint in Denmark and across Europe
According to Vattenfall, the Danish projects extend an existing position in the country, where the company operates five offshore wind farms producing approximately 6.5 TWh of fossil-free electricity each year.
Beyond Denmark, the company holds offshore wind experience in six European markets, covering projects from development through delivery to operation. "As we deliver Nordlicht in Germany, progress Zeevonk in the Netherlands, and take the next steps with Hesselø and Holmsland in Denmark, we continue to build on our offshore wind experience and expertise across markets.
Our focus remains clear: delivering competitive projects with discipline, creating long-term value and continuing to build momentum towards fossil freedom," says Anne Mette Traberg, Country Manager Denmark at Vattenfall.
